Here is why address choice matters for swap speed. Bitcoin transactions are not instantaneous. Swaps involve sending Bitcoin to an exchanger, which then forwards the swapped asset back to you. Every step that adds data to the transaction - or forces the exchanger to do extra work - can slow things down.
Address types and their impact
Bitcoin addresses come in three common formats. Each has a different effect on transaction size, fee cost, and processing time.

Legacy addresses (starting with "1") are the oldest. Transactions from these addresses are larger in data size. Larger transactions take up more block space. That means higher fees and longer confirmation times, especially when the network is busy. Swaps using legacy addresses often get stuck in the mempool longer.

SegWit addresses (starting with "3") are a partial upgrade. They reduce transaction size compared to legacy addresses. But they are not as efficient as native SegWit. Some older wallets and exchanges still use these, but they are not optimal for swap speed.

Native SegWit addresses (starting with "bc1q") are the current standard. They produce the smallest transaction data. Smaller data means lower fees per byte and faster confirmation. Exchangers process these transactions more quickly because they require less block space. For swaps, this is the address type that gives the least friction.
What happens during a swap
When you initiate a swap, the exchanger needs to confirm that your Bitcoin transaction is included in a block. They typically wait for a certain number of confirmations (often one or two) before releasing the other asset. A smaller transaction from a native SegWit address is more likely to be included in the next block, even when network fees are moderate. Legacy transactions sometimes need to wait several blocks, especially if the sender underpays fees.
The one exception: Bech32m addresses
Some newer wallets use Bech32m addresses (starting with "bc1p"). These are designed for Taproot upgrades. Not all exchangers support them yet. If you send from a Bech32m address to an exchanger that does not recognize it, the swap may fail or require manual intervention. That causes a delay. Stick to native SegWit ("bc1q") unless you are certain the exchanger accepts Taproot.
What if your wallet only gives you a legacy address?
You can still complete a swap. But expect it to take longer, and be prepared to pay a higher fee to get confirmed. Some exchangers automatically adjust their fee estimates upward for legacy transactions. Others do not. If you are in a hurry, consider moving funds to a wallet that supports native SegWit before starting the swap.
